Blackberry Triple Crown or Triple Crown of Plenty

Blackberry Triple Crown came to us from America, where it was bred by breeders. The berry bush is characterized by high yield, excellent quality and fruit taste. Another feature is the absence of thorns on the bush. We'll talk more about this blackberry in our article.

Features of the blackberry variety

The Triple Crown blackberry variety ripens for a rather long time: the crop can be harvested at the end of July-August, in some territories - a week earlier.

The leaves of the plant have a bright grassy color and denticles along the edges. The stems of the culture are powerful, growing up to 3 meters. Even in the first year of its development cycle, the shoot can grow up to 2 meters.

Triple Crown Blackberry Escape with Fruit

The fruits form an aggregate that looks like a bunch of grapes. The berries themselves are large compared to other varieties, weighing up to 9 grams each. The fruits of the variety are round, black, and have a shine. The berries taste sweet with a slight sour aftertaste and small seeds inside them. The fruit is juicy with firm pulp and spicy cherry or plum notes on the palate.

In principle, blackberries cannot "bake" in the sun, and their fruits do not shrink even at late harvest. However, the culture is not resistant to cold or frost. Therefore, in winter, blackberries are "wrapped" for the winter.

Benefits of the blackberry variety

The blackberry variety has a number of strengths that can only be distinguished through comparison with other varieties.

So, Triple berries are much larger than, for example, Thornfree fruits. The ripeness of fruits, in comparison with the same standard, is practically the same. That is, the variety cannot be attributed to the early ones. However, you can harvest faster by properly cutting the bush and growing berries in regions with a warm climate. You can shorten the ripening period by creating the illusion of a greenhouse. To do this, simply cover the plant with foil or cellophane.

Large blackberries Triple Crown

Despite the high yield, Crown cannot be attributed to industrial crops. Although it is often grown for sale because of its large and beautiful berries.

The main advantage of the berries is their specific piquant taste, reminiscent of cherry or plum flavor.

In the near abroad and in cool regions, it is better to choose a different variety due to the risk of harvesting unripe fruits.

We can say that the characteristics of this type of berries are ambiguous. The berry has a pleasant taste, large size and specific color. But, at the same time, the crop yield is average and, although it is often grown for sale, it cannot be called an industrial plant.

Bush characteristic

The bush of the plant is defined as semi-spreading, and sometimes even called upright growing. The branches of the culture grow upward or directed to the sides.

The bush of the variety grows actively, and the absence of thorns on its organs simplifies the process of growing berries, leaving and harvesting.

For the winter, the plants must be removed from supports or trellises and placed in a shelter for the winter. The stalks of the crop are laid at the beginning of their growth as close to the ground as possible.

Cultivation and reproduction

The main care of berries includes fertilizers and "warming" for the winter. However, each blackberry variety requires a specific approach. The described culture, as mentioned above, is characterized by active growth, therefore, the greenery on the bush forms very quickly. The yield of the plant is average, but I would like to increase it.

When forming a bush, the main thing is not to cut it too short. Oddly enough, a certain thickening of the "thickets" has a positive effect on the berries.

When planting, it is worth adhering to a distance between plantings of 1.2-1.5 meters. In this case, the yield will be significantly higher than when grown with a distance of 2-2.5 meters. Experienced gardeners advise Triple Crown to grow in their summer cottage. Rows are usually formed every 2.5 meters.

If you live in cooler northern regions, there is a risk that the berries will not ripen before harvest. Therefore, when forming bushes in spring, it is worth cutting them almost at the root. Secondary stems should be left as little as possible, since the plant will spend all its energy not on the formation of green mass, but on the ripening of the berries.

Ripening Blackberries Triple Crown

In general, the conditions of care are similar to the standard ones:

  • The distance between individuals for domestic cultivation should be about 2–2.5 meters, while the beds are formed almost every 3 meters. Plants are compacted in the ground and fed.
  • Lightening the weight of the culture will help its accustoming to creep along the soil: when the culture reaches a height of 0.4 meters, the shoot should be bent and fixed to the ground with a bracket. This mount is removed in the spring, when the height of the bush is 1 meter.
  • In early spring, after the snow has completely melted, fertilizers are introduced into the soil - a complex of minerals, including nitrogen. After that, you can fertilize with a phosphorus-nitrogen-potassium complex, controlling the amount of nitrogen, which is responsible for the formation of green parts of the plant.
  • The final formation of the bush occurs in the spring. Leave as many shoots as required, preferably 8–12, however, to accelerate ripening and enlargement of the berries, it is worth leaving fewer stems.
  • A tight landing and a high support garter, as evidenced by numerous reviews, is ideal for Triple Crown. By growing blackberries in this way, you can get much more harvest.
  • The height of the supports should be no more than 2 meters. The top wire should be fastened at a height of 1.6-1.7 meters.
  • Those stems from which the entire crop has already been harvested must be eliminated, and the young ones must be removed from the trellises and laid on the ground immediately after the formation of the fruits. Before frosts, it is worth wrapping the plants with an agrotechnical cloth of low density, folding it in half. Such warming of plants is more than enough for regions with a temperate climate. The materials at hand are also applicable, which are usually used in the cultivation of grapes.

So, the Triple Crown blackberry variety has a number of advantages, which is why it has gained significant popularity today.
