The history and description of the roses of the grandiflora group
The first representative of this group was bred in the middle of the twentieth century by the American gardener Walter Edward Lammertz. The parent couple was the floribunda Floradora and the hybrid tea variety Charlotte Armstrong. The resulting large-flowered hybrid was dubbed Queen Elizabeth. The flower took the shape of buds from Charlotte Armstrong, and from Floradora - continuous profuse flowering. Also, the rose received good winter hardiness and immunity to diseases.
According to the botanical description, the grandiflora is a powerful sprawling rose bush with a height of 1.5-2 m. Shoots are erect, densely leafy, covered with large thorns. The leaf plates are ovoid, dark emerald color, with finely jagged edges. Loose inflorescences consist of 3-5 double buds of 40 petals each. The flowers are large, 10-15 cm in diameter, practically odorless. The color depends on the variety and can be white, pink or red.
Planting and caring for grandiflora roses
The agricultural technology of artificially bred large-flowered varieties practically does not differ from ordinary roses. We will talk about the basic rules of growing further.
Growing place
Grandiflora is a light-loving cultivar that prefers open, well-lit spaces. The site should be on a hill, where there is no stagnation of moisture, and also protected from drafts and strong winds. The hybrid rose grows in any soil, but if we talk about the optimal option, these are nutritious, moist loamy soils. The pH should be neutral or slightly acidic.
Landing dates and rules
Grandiflora is planted in the spring, but the place for planting is prepared in the fall. To do this, dig holes 40x40 cm in size with an interval of 0.5-1 m. A drainage layer of expanded clay or broken brick is laid on the bottom. A substrate consisting of peat, sand, humus and a small amount of superphosphate is poured on top. Before planting seedlings, they are treated with copper sulfate or Fundazol.
Young pink bushes can be planted in two ways. Some gardeners practice this method:
- the planting hole is partially filled with soil mixture;
- place a seedling, carefully straightening the rhizome and deepening the root collar by 3-5 cm;
- fall asleep with the remains of the substrate, slightly tamping the ground;
- form a near-trunk circle, where a bucket of water is poured.
The second method is called "wet" and consists of the following steps:
- the hole is filled with 10 liters of water with a root growth stimulant diluted in it;
- until the liquid has had time to be absorbed, the planting material is placed;
- fall asleep on top with soil mixture, which is then carefully tamped;
- in a day, when the earth settles, the rest of the substrate is poured in and the root collar is raised a couple of centimeters.
Care features
For abundant flowering, grandiflora needs regular moisture. In summer, the norm for one bush is 10 liters per week. In case of extreme heat or prolonged absence of precipitation, watering is doubled. Water should be poured only under the bush, trying not to get on the green part of the plant. After the procedure, the soil around the rose is loosened and sprouted weeds are removed.
Fertilize the cultivar three times per season:
- early summer (organic in combination with superphosphate and potassium nitrate);
- mid-July (mineral complex);
- first decade of August (potassium-phosphorus composition).
To give the bush the correct shape, increase the flowering volume, and also protect against infections, form and sanitary pruning is carried out. They do this by adhering to the following rules:
- the procedure is carried out with a sharp, well-sharpened instrument;
- the cut is made oblique, departing from the kidney at least 50 mm;
- pruning is performed on the external bud;
- dry shoots, as well as those on which buds have not formed, are cut off under the base;
- the places of the cuts are treated with garden pitch.
Preparing for winter
Although grandiflora is frost-resistant, the culture still needs to be covered for the winter. Preparation begins in the fall, 10-14 days before a stable cold snap. The shrub is pruned, removing almost all the leaves and inflorescences, and the earth in the near-stem circle is slightly loosened. A frame is built around the bushes, which is covered with a film. Sawdust, spruce branches or peat are thrown on top, and then again covered with polyethylene.
Roses of the grandiflora group in landscape design
Luxurious large-flowered roses look great as separate plantings. However, landscape designers sometimes combine them with herbaceous perennials to create original mixborders. There are several options for using rose bushes:
- curb landings;
- decoration of paths, alleys or entrances;
- hedges;
- monorosaria;
- background landing.
