Description and characteristics of roses
There are about 390 types of roses in Ecuador. They grow on the slopes of old inactive volcanoes. The composition of the soil contributes to the active growth of plants. Due to the peculiarities of the local climate, the flowers are distinguished by large bud sizes, long stems and a bright color, which the Dutch varieties cannot match.
The maximum stem length is 1.2 m, but flowers no more than 60 cm long are more popular. The flower diameter reaches 13 cm. Among the flowers, red, yellow and pink buds are more common. The aroma is light, with an oriental touch. Cut flowers retain their freshness for a long time, so they are transported to other countries.
Comparison of Ecuadorian roses with Dutch, Kenyan and Russian
In flower shops there is a large selection of flowers that differ not only in size and color, but also in the country of cultivation. When choosing a bouquet for a celebration, geography plays an important role.
Dutch roses do just as well as Ecuadorian varieties. They lose in the size of the buds, but do not lose popularity, since they remain fresh even longer after being cut from the bush, they are distinguished by unusual shades and a stable aroma.
Kenyan varieties are distinguished by a large selection of shades, the size of the flowers is characterized as medium or large. Buyers note the pleasant aroma of these flowers, but their main advantage is transportability and preservation of appearance. After the flowers travel several thousand kilometers from Kenya, they remain fresh and beautiful for another 2 weeks.
The Russian varieties are not as large as the Ecuadorian ones, and their shades are not as original as those of the Dutch flowers. At the same time, domestic flowers do not lose popularity due to their beauty, bright aroma and cost. The absence of the need for long-term transportation is reflected in the pricing policy.
Pros and cons of roses from Ecuador
- very bright color;
- a long period of freshness after being removed from the bush;
- large size of flowers and stems.
- there is no aroma characteristic of roses;
- balsamic smell.
After transportation, roses cannot be immediately removed from the refrigerator, they must be gradually brought to room temperature. This takes time, which negatively affects the aroma of the flowers.

Growing features
In order for Ecuadorian roses to please with large buds and long flowering, they need to be properly cared for. The main thing for flowers from Ecuador is constant warmth. You can grow a rose from a bouquet bought in a store, but this is a complex, painstaking process.
Optimal conditions
Do not try to grow Ecuadorian roses outdoors. The best solution is a greenhouse. When growing these garden beauties, you should adhere to the following rules:
- Plantations are located perpendicular to the sun rays falling on them.
- The land should be fertile with a high ash content, like on the slopes of volcanoes.
- The high temperature must be maintained around the clock. Daylight hours should be at least 10-12 hours.
- Watering is carried out as the land dries up only with clean water.
Landing rules
To grow an Ecuadorian rose in the middle lane, you need to purchase its seedling. Due to the lack of heat and light, the flower will not have the same large size and bright aroma as is characteristic of its variety. It is better to purchase seedlings in specialized nurseries. They are planted in pots in greenhouses, providing a temperature not lower than +18 ° C at night and from +25 ° C in the daytime. It is important that the soil is well fertilized with peat and ash.
You can grow a seedling yourself by grafting, taking as a basis a flower from a bouquet. To do this, follow these steps:
- Trim the flower, leaves and thorns from the stem. Make slices at the top and bottom.
- Divide the stem into several parts, so that each of them has 2 buds. Slices must be oblique.
- Disinfect the lower parts of the cuttings in a manganese solution for 40 minutes, and then let them dry naturally for several hours.
- Dip the lower parts of the cuttings into the growth stimulator solution for a day.
- Prepare the soil by pre-steaming it in the oven for 20 minutes.
- Fertilize the soil with equal amounts of peat, sand and wood ash.
- Plant the cuttings in the ground at an angle, introducing them to a depth of half the growth, and cover with jars on top.
- Watering as needed.
- Observe the temperature regime as when caring for seedlings.
- The bank is allowed to be removed from the plant after the appearance of 2-3 new leaves.
- Flowers are removed at the first flowering. Otherwise, the plant will die.
- When the stalk gives a root, it can be transplanted in the form of a seedling to a new place no earlier than in a year.
Watering and fertilizing
When the stalk gives roots and grows new leaves, it is watered as before, preventing the earth from drying out. At the same time, it is important to avoid stagnation and excessive moisture. Water for irrigation is used at room temperature.
Top dressing begins after the plant is transplanted to a permanent place. Fertilization rules:
- nitrogen-containing - they are applied once in the spring to stimulate leaf growth;
- organic matter (ash, mullein, chicken droppings) - apply no more than 2-3 times in June and again at the end of summer. This will ensure good flowering and enrich the soil with nutrients after it;
- mineral (universal) - added one-time in July, when the bush fades;
- fertilizers with phosphorus - applied once in September to enrich the soil.
Preparing for winter
Ecuadorian rose varieties are difficult to grow outside the greenhouse. If the bush is planted in open ground, it will definitely need shelter during the cold weather, but this does not guarantee that it will survive the winter. In preparation for winter, the bush is covered with earth high, branches are tilted down, if possible, and covered with foil. You can use spruce branches as insulation.
Diseases and pests
On plantations in Ecuador, flowers grow in the most favorable conditions. There is a minimum of pathogenic bacteria in the mountainous clean air, the daylight hours are long, watering is controlled automatically. Growing roses of this type on your own, it is impossible to prevent diseases or damage to the bush by pests. The following problems may arise:
- Sunburns. The reason is constant exposure to direct sunlight. The bush needs to provide shade.
- Black spot. It appears as black spots on the green mass. Leads to falling foliage. The reason is lack of ventilation and excessive humidity. Eliminated by spraying with fungicides and adjusting care.
- Powdery mildew. Fungal disease manifests itself as a white coating on the stem and leaves. The reasons are an excess of nitrogen fertilizers, drafts, excessive moisture in the earth. To solve the problem, the preparations Topaz and Fundazol are used, watering and feeding are adjusted.
- Gray rot. It looks like a gray bloom on flowers and buds, which quickly crumble as a result. Appears due to high humidity or lack of light. It is eliminated by spraying with "Pure flowers".
- Scabbard, spider mite. Pests suck out nutrients from the plant, thereby causing its death. The cause of the defeat is insufficient watering, intense heat. For treatment, insecticides are used.
Ecuadorian roses are considered one of the best in the world for their large size and bright colors. A large selection of varieties allows you to choose a bouquet for any event. These roses require specific growing conditions, so it is rather difficult to breed them yourself.
