Gazebo curtains: exquisite decor and protection from the vagaries of the weather

What are the curtains
If the budget allows, it is better to close the windows on the veranda with woolen and lavsan curtains. They allow air to pass through well, dry quickly and practically do not wrinkle. Lace tulle is a great option for a gazebo decorated in Provence style. Fully glazed structures need more practical solutions, so it would be useful to buy plastic curtains. Their advantages include:
- good resistance to heat and frost;
- protection from rain and wind at any time of the year;
- the ability to combine different types of films in one product;
- hypoallergenic composition;
- self-assembly of structures in just half an hour.
In gazebos of a closed type, where the sleeping and working areas are clearly separated, it is acceptable to use products made of dense textiles. They almost block sunlight, retain heat well and absorb household noise. Ready-made sets of four such curtains cost from 10 to 15 thousand rubles. In order to save 20% of the budget, we propose to sew such models by hand from wool, chintz, brocade or acetate.
For open structures, protective curtains are needed that can last at least three seasons. This refers to tape curtains that look like blinds, as well as blinds made of perforated film. Thanks to the smallest openings, this material allows air to pass through, so that the possibility of a greenhouse effect inside the premises is out of the question.
Models made of synthetic fabrics with beveled edges, bows and magnetic clips are more suitable for decor in the Baroque and Art Deco styles.

Materials (edit)
A competent choice of products often depends on the location of the outbuildings, their quadrature and the features of design ideas. For example, breathable and at the same time dense linen is ideal for open and semi-closed gazebos ranging from 7 to 10 square meters. m. The fabric is practically impervious to water, easy to clean and does not absorb food odors.
You can decorate gazebos in Art Nouveau and Empire style with luxurious silk products. The material impresses with its soft shine and unusual color tints, but due to its increased sensitivity to temperature extremes, it loses its original density already in the second year of use. When looking for fabrics for outdoor curtains, do not forget about the following materials:
- Waterproof PVC vinyl products. In terms of price, they are slightly more expensive than conventional plastic products, but they provide better protection from rain, are easier to clean and retain their original strength for three years.
- Tough taffeta options. The fabric is dust-repellent and even antibacterial. It almost does not absorb moisture and can be easily draped.
- Rolled models made of viscose or sunscreen fiberglass, fixed in any position and at any height.
- New-fashioned Austrian canvases pulled together with laces. This is a great option for summer facilities in temperate areas.
- Transparent PVC curtains with different fastening methods. Such products retain up to 50% of the heat in rooms, maintaining an optimal level of lighting and moisture.
Fabrics
Depending on the size of the window openings and the gazebo in general, you can pick up tulle. For example, in small rooms, cropped curtains with elements of embroidery or photo printing look better. When it comes to spacious buildings with several functional areas, long curtains are a win-win option.
Smooth tulle combines well with cotton and silk fabrics. To emphasize the originality of the design solution, pay attention to the patterned materials that change color under different lighting conditions.
Breathable organza curtains do not form folds and impress with the variability of textures. Cotton contributes to the natural ventilation of the premises. The material lends itself well to processing, but absolutely does not retain heat, wrinkles and shrinks after each wash. Due to its high hygroscopicity, linen fabrics are suitable mainly for closed terraces.
In fully open annexes, it is more logical to use refractory tarpaulin curtains. They withstand temperature changes better, retain heat and do not let a drop of water through for at least 3 seasons. High resistance to burning allows them to be used in gazebos with barbecues.
Pvc
PVC curtains are able to protect against cold, rain, night birds and insects. Removable designs are especially popular. Unlike stationary ones, they do not interfere with natural ventilation of the premises, which is especially important in hot summer. When choosing such products, the following points should be taken into account:
- features of fasteners that simplify self-assembly;
- methods of joining a polymer film and edging;
- the presence of twist locks, high-quality eyelets and straps;
- light shades of the material expand the space, dark ones create the opposite effect.
Bamboo
Products made from natural materials have antibacterial properties. For this reason, they are recommended for newborns and allergy sufferers. Bamboo curtains do not deteriorate under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, do not collect dust and hardly absorb moisture. To keep them attractive for a long time, it is enough to wipe them with napkins several times a week. If you need to remove a greasy stain, use a radiator brush.
Installation of such curtains involves the use of adhesive tape or special clips. In this case, you do not have to drill holes in the windows, and the maximum installation time will not exceed half an hour.
Awning canvases
These include curtains made of tarpaulin, tear-resistant nylon and shape-stable tarpaulin. The latter fabric, in terms of operational properties, bypasses not only dense canvas, but also rigid fabrics with polymer plasticizers in the composition. Due to its elasticity, it can be used in the design of large and small openings, and in terms of vapor permeability, tarpaulin surpasses even PVC.
Jute-based burlap is suitable for decorating gazebos in eco-style. The material can withstand heavy mechanical loads, and its pleasant golden color is the basis for the embodiment of any design ideas. It is possible to decorate a perfectly flat fabric with openwork lace, ruffles and variegated ribbons.
If it is important to combine lightness and resistance to adverse external factors in a product, we recommend Oxford with the 600D mark. This is almost the only type of fabric from which you can sew not only high-quality curtains, but also secluded tents for summer cottages.
Mounting methods
Depending on the type of eaves, whether it is a metal cable or, for example, a busbar structure with grooves, the optimal fastening methods are chosen. Tulle curtains will definitely require curtain ribbons or magnets. Long brackets for blinds.
When using regular ties that accentuate the original shapes of the cornices, it is important to consider options for knots and bows. Strip curtains made of frost-resistant fabrics can be hung in a semi-open gazebo on a slope, and blind hinges can be used as an attachment. Eyelets are ways to withstand canvas of any density. In the case of airy tulle options, a drawstring is required.
For reliable fixation of open-type rolled products, it is better to use the Uni mechanism, which provides for the use of self-tapping screws. When installing closed models, you will need double-sided tape. And when it comes to modern designs with an electric drive, you need:
- Mark the attachment points with a pencil.
- Drill a hole for the bracket on the automatic steering side of the model.
- Make a recess for the second bracket on the sleeve side.
- Install the pipe.
If you need to fix the awning canvas on fixed sashes, you will need a confirmation with a groove in the caps.
With your own hands
If you want to sew the curtains by hand, try to correctly measure and calculate the exact amount of materials. The length of the cornice, multiplied by 1.3, is considered the optimal width of the product. For decoration, you need about 30-40 cm of satin or brocade. From improvised means - braid, twine, chalk, ruler and buttons. And from the possible sewing methods, choose a machine stitch or one hundred percent handmade.
If you have windows with non-standard dimensions, make a bevel pattern. Even if the fabric is a little lacking, the length of the product can be visually increased by using wooden rings. For self-sewing curtains made of fireproof film, in addition to the main material, you will need scissors, twine and eyelets.
First you need to cut strips with a width of 220-250 mm. Then glue them with a soldering iron, install plastic rings and attach the finished products to the openings of the extension using self-tapping screws. To allow air to enter the room, make small holes in the curtains for openings with Velcro.
