Brick brazier: a simple construction scheme for an amateur master
Content
Types of barbecues
The owners of summer cottages can always experiment with their territory. Why not make a simple DIY cooking stove? After all, it is much more pleasant to cook in the fresh air, in the company of friends and relatives.
A brick brazier can be made for operation all year round, with a smokehouse, barbecue, cauldron, pipe. Even a standard street kebab maker looks great and does the job perfectly.
A brick brazier is a massive stationary structure. At the same time, the structure can have different dimensions, design and additional components. Usually a stationary stove consists of:
- base;
- foundation;
- lower and upper side walls;
- braziers;
- chimney.
The simplified version is not equipped with a pipe, but then it must be placed in the open air.
The shape of the stove is also different. In most cases, a rectangular or square barbecue is built. A round hearth for frying looks more interesting, but its construction is rather laborious. In the gazebo, there is usually a corner barbecue, next to which you can equip a washbasin, a cutting table.

Where to install
It is very important to decide on the location for the garden stove, first of all for safety reasons. That is why it is not recommended to install the barbecue in wooden arbors, near living vegetation.
The main recommendations for choosing a place for the device:
- Away from wind and dust - it's about cooking, so hygiene is a priority. It is advisable that the smoke from the stove is not carried by the wind to the neighbors.
- The area for the barbecue should be flat.
- Make sure that water and gas are close to the cooking area. This will greatly facilitate the process.
- To make the structure last longer, install it under a canopy.
Do not forget that there will be a foundation under the stove, calculate the area with a small margin.
Simple option
Bricklaying is a simple and straightforward process. For the construction to be successful, you must first draw up a project. Having made a complex barbecue, you can simultaneously embody a grill, barbecue, smokehouse in it.
At the stage of development of the drawing, the auxiliary components of the product are prescribed: a place for dishes, a cutting board, a washbasin. In practice, such devices are very helpful.
An important stage is the choice of material. We recommend using refractory bricks. Even at high temperatures, it will not lose its properties. Ceramic bricks have a beautiful appearance, besides, they are quite reliable.
In addition to the material, do not forget to prepare the instrument. We will use a standard set: shovel, trowel, level, buckets, concrete mixer or trough.
Foundation
A brick brazier is distinguished by its solid weight. So making the base is not a whim, but a necessity. The durability of a homemade structure depends on the foundation, so it must be reliable.
Step-by-step instruction:
- It is necessary to make a markup of the area. Pegs and twine are enough.
- A pit will be dug on the marked area. Its optimum depth is 10–15 cm. Make sure that the hole is free of drops.
- The bottom must be filled with slag.
- It is necessary to build a formwork around the perimeter.
- To increase reliability, it is better to lay a reinforcing mesh.
- Now it remains to fill the area with concrete. Inexpensive and good in properties solution of the M-250 brand.
Do not forget that you can start further work on the foundation only after it is completely dry. The lower the ambient temperature, the longer the coating dries. On average, you need to wait about a week.
Furnace masonry
It is better to pour a screed onto the resulting concrete base, leveling the floor level in parallel. Now you can equip the waterproofing.
We recommend using solid ceramic or stove bricks for masonry. Note that the second option is more expensive. The masonry is carried out using a clay-sand mixture. To increase the strength properties of the mortar, add a little cement to it. The one-brick method is fine. To make the brazier look aesthetically pleasing, level the walls. Remove excess solution, strictly follow the project. Try to keep everything symmetrical.
At this stage, you can fold the container for dishes, the area for cutting food, etc.
With pipe
It will take more time to build a stove with a chimney. Construction becomes more complicated, but the barbecue takes on the appearance of a full-fledged architectural structure. To avoid malfunctions and negative consequences of overheating, lay the pipe out of heat-resistant bricks.
For more efficient operation of the stove, cover the chimney with a canopy. When doing this, use non-flammable materials. For added protection, they can be impregnated with special agents. If you do not want to heavily load the structure, make a metal smoke collector.
The minimum pipe height should be 150 cm. If you plan to build a complex structure with arched elements, use a circle during construction - bricks are mounted on it with a gap of about a centimeter. The voids are filled with a solution. Then the circle is removed.
The pipe can be fixed to support columns. Going up, it should gradually taper.
Base
A summer cottage barbecue with a pipe is being erected on the foundation. This is logical, because the weight of the stove is even greater than that of an ordinary brick barbecue. There are no cardinal features in the arrangement of the foundation. You need to work according to the standard scheme: clean the site, make a hole, fill in sand and crushed stone, lay reinforcement, fill with mortar.
Ordering
The rows are laid with an offset. For this we need the halves of the bricks. You can cut them using a grinder. The first 6 rows will form the brazier and cutting table on the right side. From the 7th row, laying is performed only in the place where the grill itself will be located.
So that from the point of view of geometry everything was without blots, pull the rope, align the rows along it. Use a building level to check symmetry. Pay attention to the verticality of the sides and corners. The ordering of a brick shashlik maker is quite simple, even users with minimal skills will not encounter difficulties. After the laying is finished, let the structure dry.
If there is a high probability of precipitation, but the grill is not protected by a canopy, cover it with oilcloth.
When using a new stove for the first time, take your time: make a small fire and briefly.
Looking for an outdoor cooking corner? We recommend making a brick barbecue. Construction takes a little time, but in return you get a durable and convenient structure. To make the workflow go through with a minimum number of errors, make accurate calculations, think over the main components of the structure.
