Rules for planting and caring for onions in the open field

Onions are always present in every home. And surely every owner of a land plot in the Moscow region or in another region grows it in his own soil or in greenhouses. What methods of planting in open ground are there and how to properly grow and care for onions? This is what will be discussed further.

Growing features

Onions come in a variety of varieties. Of course, depending on the type, the time when it is better to plant it in open ground also depends. For example, it is recommended to plant leeks approximately in mid-May, when the soil is already well warmed up and all frosts have ended. But it is better to do this with seeds or seedlings. To get a tasty feather (greens), it is worth choosing the best variety of batun and planting it in greenhouses.

How is onion planting in an open UAH

Pay special attention to the fact that it is not recommended to plant onions in the same place in the open field every year. It is possible to return it to the area where it was already grown only after four years, or even all five. And only if the roots of garlic, carrots, cucumbers and onions were not planted there. The best option, after which you can sow nigella, is: cabbage, potatoes, legumes, tomatoes, peas or siderates. The soil must be loosened well in advance so that it is fertile. And for this, it is recommended to fertilize it even in the autumn. Then, after planting the onion, in the process of growing it will only need to be "fed" several times.

The planting process itself is not too laborious. It will need minimal care, besides, the onion is very resistant to the cold season and drought. And yet, you probably have a question in your mind - when to plant? How to make sure that the harvest does not upset. What varieties to choose for the Moscow region zone?

In fact, even beginners in this business should not have difficulties, since the bow is completely picky. Which varieties to choose is up to you personally - who loves what more. Well, the principle of planting in open ground is the same for all varieties. One has only to figure out how and when to plant it. The bulbs must be properly prepared before planting them outdoors. The "top" (neck) should be carefully trimmed, but not too much!

Onions can be planted in three ways

Returning to the planting period, it can be noted that experienced gardeners-gardeners sow nigella, sowing - at the end of April - beginning of May, when the soil is already warmed up enough and the times of cold days and nights with frost have passed. If the temperature of the soil is less than 12 degrees at the moment when you start planting onions, a feather (arrows) will begin to appear, whichever varieties you prefer. During the growing season, onions must be loosened at least 5-6 times, 4-5 cm deep. During the entire period of active growth, it is very important to water the plants, and stop watering a month before harvesting.

Beforehand, also take care of the very area where you plan to plant onions. The soil should be dry, well-lit and sunny, as well as pre-fertilized, as discussed above. In addition, you need to check its acidity, if it is increased, lime must be added to the soil. The peculiarity of growing onions in the open field is the planting principle. The fact is that in the first year in spring it is necessary to sow seeds, from which small bulbs will grow by autumn (they are called sevok).Next year, also in the spring, you need to plant the seedlings, after which, by the fall, you will get a full harvest of the initially selected variety of onion seeds, but there is also a nuance in the fact that it is quite difficult to keep the seedlings until the spring planting, when it is warm. It is for this reason that very many sow it in the same year when it ripened, in the soil before the winter period.

From sevka

This method is applicable for growing outdoors during spring or autumn. If you want to grow a green feather, you need to plant it in the summer. In order to get a harvest of ready-to-eat onions after the very first planting, choose the best varieties for yourself and buy immediately a set, which can be found almost everywhere in the Moscow region! Correct fit:

  • when buying material for planting, make sure that it is of high quality, there is no spoilage or rot, the tubers must be firm and perfectly dried;
  • the seedlings are usually the same in size - this is the guarantee that the seedlings will be almost simultaneous;
  • first, the material must be warmed up (in the sun or near the stove, batteries);
  • beforehand (at night) before planting, it is important to soak the seedlings in fertilizer;
  • before planting, soak the onion in a solution of copper sulfate so that it does not get sick with any fungi;
  • if you love and want to grow a green feather, you should cut off the tops of the sevka slightly;
  • the beds must first be "thought out" and prepared;
  • plant the onion in the ground to a depth of no more than 4–5 cm, and water it well immediately after planting. Caring for it is simple enough.

Planting onions from sets

Nevertheless, in the summer, onions need to be looked after especially. The main thing in the growing process is to monitor the beds and prevent the death of the plant, tasty feather and future tasty harvest.

From seedlings

To get a green feather, as mentioned above, it is best to plant onions in the summer. Since the onion is a biennial plant, it propagates with the help of seeds. The seeds themselves can be obtained on their own. But for this you need to decide on the best variety you like, and collect its seeds. For growing onions from seedlings, as a rule, the best "spicy" varieties are selected (Krasnodar 35, Kaba, etc.). The main advantage of growing by seedlings is the ability to get a crop in almost any region of the Moscow region, as well as in the more northern part of the country.

Seedlings are prepared in warm rooms in wooden boxes. Its age should reach up to 60 days. When young seedlings are planted in the ground, the yield will be much lower. And when you plant more "adult" seedlings, it will "take root" very badly and the yield will also be much worse. Seedlings require some care. She needs a lot of light and direct sunlight is desirable.

Planting seedlings in open ground

The seeds must first be prepared by treating them with special disinfectants, etc. Further, they must be planted in a box with earth. The optimum temperature for growing seedlings is up to 20 degrees during the day and up to 12 degrees at night. Water seedlings every 2-3 days, weed if weeds appear. A week before planting seedlings in the ground, open a window or window in the room so that it adapts to the open air. When the seedlings are ready, before planting, they will have leaves (up to four pieces), and the thickness of the future feather is about 4 mm.

It is best to plant in the ground in the evening, in cloudy weather, in an inclined way to the same depth as it grew in the box. Observe the distance between the rows when planting ~ 15 cm, and between the plants themselves ~ 5 cm. At the end of planting, water the seedlings and mulch the bed 2 cm thick with peat chips. Then it remains to regularly loosen the soil, remove weeds, apply top dressing, water, etc.

From seed

It is carried out in three stages:

  1. seeds are being prepared;
  2. are planted in the ground;
  3. further care.

The main thing is to germinate the planting material. After all, if you do this beforehand, the feather will begin to germinate faster and better. Before sowing onion seeds in the soil, soak them in a damp cloth for three to five days. In addition, since planting, cultivation and care will be carried out in the open field, the plant will be more unpretentious to weather conditions, behaving most resiliently not only in showers, but also in relation to pests, which as a result will reward the owner with an excellent harvest of excellent onions.

Care for sprouted onions in the open field

The furrows should be very small, after sifting the seeds, they are covered with a very small layer of earth. And on top, all this needs to be sprinkled with compost (you can also use humus). When the first shoots appear, thin the onion, weak plants can be removed. The repeated "breakthrough" is done approximately in a week. The torn bow will already have a fairly developed feather, it can even be used already. Caring for the onion plant is the same as discussed above.
