When to harvest garlic in the Urals

When garlic ripens in the Urals
Taking into account the climatic features of the Ural region, the ripening dates of winter garlic are the last days of July, while spring garlic lasts until mid-August, or even early September. The summer period is very important for the ripening of the culture: if it is excessively dry, then the cloves will be small, shriveled, but if, on the contrary, the summer turned out to be rainy, then with a high probability it will rot. Winter garlic is harvested from the garden when 100-110 days have passed from the moment of germination, spring garlic - 15-25 days later.
In addition to general information about when garlic ripens, varietal characteristics of ripening should be taken into account. For example, the growing season of the Alkor variety is only 94 days. Moreover, he himself is resistant to fungal diseases, the yellow dwarf virus. The "Novosibirsk" variety ripens even earlier, it takes 85 days for it. A delay in maturation can also be caused by illness, lack of minerals or organic nutrients. Therefore, do not rely blindly on book knowledge - carefully monitor the condition of the plants on your site.
Hybrid varieties have not only an accelerated growing season, but also a higher immunity to the harmful activity of fungal microflora.
Among other varieties suitable for the Ural region, it should be noted:
- The mid-season "Skif" variety, which reproduces both by cloves and air caps. Differs in a lilac shade of scales, a small bulb, dense and sharp pulp. Resists bacteriosis and white rot well.
- Gradekovsky variety is also early maturing and winter. 81-86 days pass before harvesting. The bulbs are small, covered with white-lilac scales. The cloves themselves also have a lilac hue. Air bulbs are deep lilac, oblong, oval in shape.
- Variety "Bashkirsky 85" is removed from the garden in 85-90 days. The bulb contains 5-6 cloves with dense, sharp pulp. The bulb is white with a slight purple tint, while the airy bulb is deep purple. Has increased immunity against bacterial rot, onion flour, peronosporosis.
The lunar calendar for 2021 has determined favorable dates when you need to remove the culture from the beds in this way: in July, you need to harvest spring garlic on the 15-16, 27 and 31, for August the best days are 19, 23, 30, in September, look at the site - 2, 3, 8-12, 15, 20-22, 26-29. Winter varieties in the summer of 2021 are suitable for harvesting on 15-16, 27, 31 July, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, 18-19, 22-24 August.
How to determine maturity
There are several ways to check if a garlic is ripe and ready for harvest. Firstly, you need to carefully rake the ground around the bulbs and look at their husks, if it is dense and intact, the garlic is removed from the site.Secondly, the aerial part of the plant also indicates when to harvest: the leaves turn yellow and fall off, the neck of the false stem becomes soft, the feathers lie down. Among other things, the inflorescences begin to crack, and the head of the garlic becomes hard. The husks of ripe cloves peel off easily. Check plants in multiple beds at once to be sure all bulbs are fully ripe.
To better control the ripening process, stop watering the garlic beds in a few weeks (usually 2-3). Firstly, in this way, you will save the culture from the active development of fungal microflora. Secondly, the bulbs will not rot. You can also remove the arrows and tie the beginning to turn yellow garlic feathers in a knot. This helps to redirect nutrients to the root system and the bulb, which means that it does not leave the culture a chance to gain absolutely unnecessary green mass at this stage.
Collection
When all the signs indicate that the plant is ready to be harvested, it is important not to hesitate and not wait for some special moment.
Overexposed in the ground, this culture loses its ability for long-term storage and further planting. In this case, it does not matter what kind you grow - spring or arrowhead.
Gently pry the onions with a pitchfork so that they are on the ground. It is very important not to damage them, so as not to cause the process of decay and not to attract harmful insects. When all the garlic heads are on the surface, transfer them to a shelter and leave to dry for at least 5 days. This must be done to prevent the bulbs from rotting during winter storage.
It is best to dig up the bulbs in dry, calm weather, preferably in the morning or late evening. An important factor is the absence of scorching heat, which will damage the teeth. At this stage, the roots and leaves should not be cut, as this will lead to irreversible wilting of the plant. Carefully peel the soil from the bulbs, try not to break off the roots. After the initial drying has passed, you can spread the garlic heads on a grid or hang them for further storage.
Another option for preparatory care for freshly dug garlic is rinsing in cool water. If this is the case, leave the bulbs to dry so that the water flows into the pan or onto the ground, but does not accumulate under the fruit. When the bulbs are dry, their roots and stems are cut off and left to dry under a canopy for another 7-10 days. The spring look is especially well tolerated.
Storage
The 2021 harvest would be nice to keep at least until next spring. Fortunately, over the years of growing and cultivating garlic bulbs, many ways have accumulated to do this easily, quickly, efficiently, sometimes even extraordinary.
After ten days of drying under a canopy, the garlic bulbs are cut on both sides, leaving only 2 cm of roots and no more than 5-6 cm of the stem. This length of a dry stem is enough to braid a braid or tie dried heads into a bouquet. Choose the largest specimens for this storage, as they retain their beneficial properties for much longer.
Method 1: wooden box
Build a box that suits you in size, make holes in its walls, and cover the bottom with thick salt. Lay out a row of garlic heads, sprinkle another layer of salt on top. Spread the heads out, interspersed with salt layers, until the drawer is full. If this amount of salt bothers you, replace it with wood ash or sawdust.
Method 2: oil
First, you need to disassemble all the bulbs and peel each clove from the scales. Pour the resulting raw material into a large jar, shake it so that the cloves are located close to each other. Pour in sunflower oil, olive oil, or corn oil so that it covers all the prongs. Place the lid on the jar and place in a dark, dry, cool place. You can later use this oil in your cooking. You can store garlic in this way only for 3 months, after which it will lose all its beneficial properties.
Method 3: bags
Prepare the required number of tissue or paper bags, place the bulbs in them and hang in a cool, dry place. With this kind of storage, access to fresh air is very important.
Method 4: paraffin
Melt the paraffin wax, taking all precautions. Holding the head of the garlic by the stem, dip the onion in paraffin wax, drain, and then place it in a dark, dry, cool place.
Method 5: cold
After drying, place the garlic bulbs in a cool, dry place such as a basement or refrigerator and store at + 2-5 ° C. In this case, it is very important that the air humidity is 0, otherwise the heads will begin to rot.
Hopefully the harvest in 2021 will be good!
