How to get rid of moles in the country forever

Mole species
Before talking about how to get rid of a mole, you need to understand its species. At the summer cottage, the following types of these animals can be got:
- European black. These moles feed on insects, larvae, earthworms, due to which they destroy a large number of pests that lead to diseases of cultivated plants. In Europe, this species is listed in the Red Book, but in our country it is still being destroyed;
- forest. The fur of these animals is red-brown or gray-brown, the back is darker and the abdomen is lighter. This species causes significant harm to the plants growing in the suburban area. Their victims are carrots, fruit trees and berry bushes, as well as beets and cabbage. So they need to be removed from the garden as soon as possible, otherwise you can lose part of the harvest. But the appearance of precisely these moles in the summer cottage is an extremely rare occurrence.
- field. The most harmful and active. Their skin is grayish brown, and the muzzle is typical of a rodent. You need to get rid of this pest as soon as possible, otherwise you may lose all the shrubs on the site. Black and red currants, raspberries and gooseberries are especially affected by it. In summer, root crops can also be affected by the field mole. But more plants, these animals prefer insects and larvae.
Whatever mole appears at your summer cottage, you will have to get rid of the animal in most cases, since their activity, albeit indirect, will lead to the death of some plants. They will die due to the fact that the roots will hang in the "air" - in dug holes.
Mole in the country - benefit or harm?
In fact, it is not always necessary to get rid of a mole that has appeared on a personal plot. Indeed, contrary to popular belief, they are more useful than real harm. They destroy many harmful insects (bears, beetles, larvae, etc.). The maximum benefit from these them will be at the beginning of summer.
Therefore, the decision to remove the mole can turn into a greater disaster. If you nevertheless decide to get rid of such a neighborhood, then choose more gentle and temporary measures of struggle. With all this, it must be remembered that expelling moles from the site will open the way for voles and mice, which with almost 100% probability will appear in your garden.
Another problem will remain the desert burrows, with which you already cannot do anything. And all the same mice or other rodents will settle in them, which will purposefully destroy crops.

Effective ways to fight
Since the activity of a mole on the site will allow you to effectively get rid of many harmful insects, it is logical that you need to get rid of the animal itself after it has done useful work. At the same time, it is better to choose control measures that drive out rather than kill the mole. After all, it may turn out to be a Red Book species.
You can get rid of a mole in the following ways:
- the most effective and simple way to combat is planting plants with a strong smell in the garden.Such plants can be tagetis, celery, hyssop, basil, dill, etc. You need to plant these plants in small heaps, but throughout the site. 1.5 months after planting, they will begin to emit a smell and the moles themselves will leave your "hospitable" garden;
- You can take these animals out by burying waste from salted herring (spoiled fish, entrails, head, etc.) at the exit from their holes. But this method of control is less effective, since after the fish waste is completely decomposed in the ground, the animals will return. Then you will have to get rid of them again.
Another method of struggle is the transplant of daffodils. The point here is again in the smell. His moles cannot stand it and therefore will very quickly leave your summer cottage. They need to be planted near wormholes. A positive result will be noticeable in a couple of weeks.
The use of mole traps is considered a less effective method of control. This tool will help get rid of the animals pretty quickly. But moles also quickly learn to get around such obstacles. Today there are several types of such traps. They are small tubes with caps on both sides.
Another remedy often used in vegetable gardens to combat moles is a mole trap or traps. An animal cannot get out of such a device on its own. But the question here is different: how to install the mole trap in the holes? For installation, you need to remove the top layer of earth near the burrow. We set the trap open. Remember to install only with gloves. Otherwise, the animal will smell your scent and bypass the trap.
In addition to the above methods, some gardeners suggest using special "scarers" to protect against moles. Their principle of operation is to generate a variety of loud sounds. Such "scarers" can be made with your own hands in the form of rattles, plastic bottles and various noisemakers. But this tool is actually practically ineffective, although it is popularly known as an "excellent method".
Popular methods of struggle include:
- use of reeds. Its length must be at least 2 meters. You clean the insides of the reeds and insert a tube into it. Bury the resulting structure in the ground, leaving 60 cm above the ground. With the help of the wind, the reeds will create a sound that scares away animals;
- the most difficult way is to dig hard material (slate, linoleum) into the ground. It needs to be dug in to a depth of 70 cm. As a result, you will get a physical barrier against moles;
- flooding of burrows with water.
Another way to effectively combat moles is the use of various poisons. Several types of poisons can be found on the market. Before using such products, be sure to read the instructions for use.
Please note that if you completely destroy the entire mole population within your site, in a couple of years you will be exhausted from the invasion of bears, May beetles and other insects that will not only damage your crop, but infect them with various diseases. So moles in comparison with this "happiness" will seem to you the lesser of evils. Therefore, in a situation where you need to get rid of moles, it is better to choose non-radical methods of struggle.
Prophylaxis
The best and most proven means of dealing with moles is to take preventive measures. This will help you not only to protect your garden from the "housekeeping" of the animal, but also to save energy, time and money, aimed at expelling the moles that have appeared from the site. But preventive measures are not cheap, and they are not always necessary. After all, moles can be much more beneficial than obvious harm.
The most effective and optimal way to prevent the appearance of moles on a personal plot is to install a special rigid fence around the entire perimeter of a vegetable garden or garden.An excellent material for fencing a site is linoleum, slate, galvanized mesh (folded in several layers) and roofing material. The fence dug into the ground should be closed so that it rises 50 cm above the ground.
Instead of such a fence, you can pour shafts around the perimeter of the garden, up to 35 cm deep, falling asleep with rubble and sand. But especially stubborn animals can overcome such a fence.
In addition, you can use a more accessible and cheaper method - planting legumes (especially black beans). So, we found out that the appearance of moles in a summer cottage, especially at the beginning of summer, will only benefit the garden and the cultivated plants grown on it. But closer to autumn, it is still better to resort to gentle methods of scaring away animals. This approach to the question is optimal - and you will be satisfied, and the moles will be safe.
